What are nicotine pouches?
A nicotine pouch is a small white sachet of plant fibre, nicotine, flavouring and sweetener that sits under your top lip. There is no tobacco leaf inside it, nothing is burned and nothing is inhaled. The nicotine passes through the lining of the mouth while the pouch stays in place.
Pouches come loose in a screw-top can, and most of the range here is the slim format, which is longer and narrower than a traditional round portion and sits flatter against the gum. A worked example. A Killa can is labelled 16.5 mg/g, which is a concentration rather than a pouch figure, and works out at roughly 13.2mg in each pouch. An Iceberg can labelled 50 mg/g holds 20 pouches of 0.60g, which comes to about 30mg per pouch. Where a can does not say clearly which measure it is using, treat the printed number as the figure to go by and check the can. How to use nicotine pouches
Take one pouch from the can, place it under your top lip against the gum, and leave it there. Do not chew it and do not swallow it. Most people keep a pouch in for 20 to 60 minutes, then put the used pouch in the lid compartment and bin it with household waste.
- Start with one pouch rather than two.
- Settle it flat against the gum with your tongue. A tingle in the first few minutes is normal.
- Leave it in place for as long as the flavour and the sensation last, up to around an hour.
- Take it out, put it in the lid compartment if the can has one, and throw it away.
